Ron Ruf first came to Florence with his
wife and daughters 10 years ago and served the Florence Foursquare
church for 3 years as High school and Middle School youth pastor. After
receiving a call to pastor the Lincoln City Foursquare church in 1999,
Ron moved up the coast and maintained a close personal friendship with
Pastor George. That friendship helped sustain Ruf through the lengthy
illness and loss of his wife Kristine. Their
friendship also formed the foundation for Ruf to be able to return to
serve in an associate role at the Florence Church.
During the time his wife, Kristine, was on hospice care, Ron had
received support, information, and encouragement from Jacki Crowson, a
hospice worker in her home town in Mississippi . After Kristine
passed away, Pastor Ron and Jacki continued talking, and eventually
feelings for each other grew out of friendship.
Ruf’s ministry
duties at the church include teaching the Wednesday evening Bible study
at 7 p.m. (He is teaching a series about the sermon on the mount). He is also helping with the music ministry at the church, and
plays guitar, bass guitar and sings at the 10:45 a.m. Sunday services. Plans are in the works for a singles ministry at the
church which he will help oversee. He also returns to serving the youth
ministry and is starting a group for high schoolers that currently meets
Sunday evenings after church. Ruf has a philosophy about youth ministry,
“Teenagers today need to see that Christianity is not something intended
to restrict them, but benefit them for a lifetime. I want to help
the youth of Florence understand that God doesn’t just say, ‘Don’t do
this’ to be mean or to limit their fun. When God says ‘I don’t
want you to do this’ it is because he loves us and knows that making the
right decisions in life leads to future peace, joy, and contentment.
God doesn’t want to kill our fun, rather He wants us to enjoy life to
the fullest, as Jesus said in John 10:10. However He gives us
guidelines that, if followed, will lead us into that fullness of life
for the rest of our lives. I would like to invite all high school
age youth in Florence to come to the church on Sunday after church and begin to see for themselves how
wonderful the life is that God has intended for them.”
The Florence
Foursquare youth group is open to everyone regardless of church
affiliation.
